Miracle Nutrition

by Jae Sabol

In the 1700's, Ben Franklin said "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" and today more than ever this could not be more true. The most recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control show that 12 of the top 15 leading causes of death in the U.S. are directly influenced by diet. Diseases we KNOW are killers like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, influenza and Alzheimer's are just a few areas where nutrition can add years to your life if you start a comprehensive approach to prevention with nutrition. Nutrition affects skin health, sleep quality, hormone balance, energy and metabolism, weight control, stress levels and much much more so it is no surprise with the interdependence of all the body's systems that nutrition truly is the single most important preventative measure you can take for your health. Your entire body replaces itself every 7 years; bone cells have some of the lowest rates of turnover and skin cells have some of the highest rates with literally BILLIONS lost every day. The building blocks of all these new cells, your hormonal system, your nervous system, your cardiovascular system and every other system in your body, working hard to do their job and keep you alive, are the foods you eat. A simple analogy is to think of your body like a car and food like fuel, the quality of the foods you put in your body can be likened to putting low grade dirty fuel (low quality food) in your car verses high octane jet fuel (high quality food). In both cases the car will continue to run, but only in ONE case will it run at peak efficiency and with longevity. Science is only beginning to scrape the surface of just how powerful nutrition really is for the repair and maintenance of your entire body. An apple has some 2000 different types of vitamins, minerals, co-factors, antioxidants and enzymes in it and less than 10% of these have been isolated and studied enough to be even partially understood. While the synergistic nature of all the components of a superfood like the simple apple logically makes sense, the scientific method of isolation for deeper understanding has led to an explosion of research focused on the component parts of foods rather than the healing nature of WHOLE foods. Add to this that nature cannot be patented and you have a clear picture as to why the pharmaceutical industry singularly dwarfs all combined holistic health approaches in dollars spent on research, marketing and distribution. Hope, however, is not lost in this money driven system. In just the last decade alone the availability and convenience of high quality nutritional products has taken a massive leap forward. While the supplement industry has continued to grow with synthetic and isolated nutritional supplements, a host of new 'super food' supplements and drinks have entered the field made from real ingredients and backed by compelling research. While the worst of these still contain added flavors, preservatives and synthetic ingredients, the best are non-pasteurized living whole foods free of ALL additives and literally a combination of the best ingredients science has identified delivered in their natural whole food state, not pasteurized, and conveniently packaged with an impressive two year shelf life. The best part is that these products are condensed nutrition requiring very little a day to fortify your diet enough to generate noticeable results in most people in less than 90 days. Because even the slightest deficiency in essential minerals, antioxidants and key nutrients can have dramatic affects on your health and quality of life, the all natural super food products hitting the market today are showing amazing results at reasonable prices while delivering comprehensive nutrition in its natural form. Containing powerhouse proven super foods like grapes, pomegranate, blue berries, aloe vera, prunes, and apples, these nutritional products condense the nutrition while avoiding the inconvenience and cost of trying to acquire and consume large quantities and varieties of specific health foods. Even the most discerning of purists have products available that are vegan, organic, non-pasteurized, no preservatives, green, no concentrates, no added sugars, no added flavors, and safe for even pregnant women and infants. While these products are a little harder to find because most consumers aren't educated or don't care enough to desire this level of detail, they do exist and the market is filled with enough competition to drive even the most elite of product prices down to comparable levels. Be clear in what you want and there is a product for everyone. Added sugars, artificial flavors, artificial colors, and synthetic ingredients are generally accepted as best avoided in a health food you might consume every day. Other ingredients may come as more of a personal decision. If added flavors are of concern to you, decide if you buy into some of the concern over even 'natural flavors' and search for a product free of them. Consider your preservatives in these products, does something like sodium benzoate fit into your optimum nutrition plan - do your research? Are bars and powders something you are ok with, or would you rather go with a liquid for its improved digestibility, bioavailability, and reduced calories? If you DO decide a liquid is the best choice for you, check liquids to see if they are made from powders, concentrates or whole foods, there is a big difference. Are you ok with cooked (pasteurized/flash pasteurized) foods? Are you interested in a single ingredient product or something with more diversity? Do you want a product you buy in the store or would you rather have it shipped directly to you? If just a few bites of a superfood, or just a couple ounces of a superfood drink could dramatically improve your state of well-being and significantly improve your resistance to disease while prolonging your life, would you invest in that? That is the question most people should be asking themselves today and with the FDA now recommending a minimum of 3-5 servings of fruit and vegetables, which is 3-5 cups, old Ben may have had it right. Research is showing people just don't have the time for their fruit and vegetables so one ounce of prevention in the form of some of the breakthrough advances in nutrition today could literally be worth a pound of cure tomorrow when you end up avoiding costly medical bills, reducing your dependence on medications, and improving your quality of life BEFORE a major problem starts.
